Chomsky consequences of capitalism6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The seven-week Community Classroom course costs $300 and is offered by the University of Arizona College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. “Whether you agree with Chomsky’s views or not, the course is a rare opportunity to discuss politics with one of the most influential thinkers of the past century,” says John Paul Jones III, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The politics course has a 90% approval rating (excellent or very good), and student comments have included, “These lectures were the intellectual highlights of my life” and “Imagine being able to say you took a class with Einstein. The revamped course, now named “ Consequences of Capitalism," is being offered online for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This spring, students from all over the world can take a class from Noam Chomsky from the comfort of their own homes. They were not alone in their determination to take a class from the world-renowned linguist and social critic. Lydia Griffith moved to Tucson from Ireland for the seven-week course, and Joe Coughlin made a 12-hour commute from Bakersfield, Calif., twice a week for the class, two years in a row. In 2018, Thomas Saupique and Aurelie Viotto moved from Lyon, France, to Tucson, Ariz., to take the course “What is Politics,” co-taught by Noam Chomsky at the University of Arizona. ![]()

Lie to her melinda leigh6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() The danger was a bit close to home this time, heightening the tension dramatically. Bree and her family continue to bond and grow stronger, even including Matt as part of that unit, along with their menagerie of pets. This was a gnarly, cleverly designed mystery that kept me thinking throughout. ![]() I’ll always opt to listen to this series. I’m still loving Traister’s storytelling skills and how she creates character distinctions. That killer is clever and therein lies the misdirection at times. We get the killer’s point of view early on and I’ve learned to pay close attention to subtle clues and doing that paid off, somewhat. My fear of them is beyond description so I had to claw through my own repulsion to stay focused (just a heads up!). But first I had to get around the snakes. I am a fan of misdirection and there’s a lot of that here. As they close in on a suspect, Bree receives a strange warning, causing her to wonder if she’s on the right track. As they’re pursuing that angle, another victim is discovered the next day in an almost identical manner, this time with a different word carved on his forehead. The closest clue to a suspect was his robust activity on a dating app. He was also a reptile collector, making the scene dangerous for law enforcement as well. Sheriff Bree Taggert and investigator Matt Flynn are called to a strange crime scene where the victim was bound and smothered with his face plastic wrapped and carved with one word. ![]()

Redshirts book6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The main character of the book, who was only an extra on the TV show, says "we're all supposed to think we're real people who found out we were extras on a TV show" but of course the reader knows all of them are actually characters in a book. As far as I'm concerned, quantum physics could have been written by a hack."īut the best part is the end, where it gets even more meta. For example, "Does quantum physics count? Because I don't understand that crap at all. The characters try to figure out when their lives branched off from actual reality by looking for crazy nonsense. This conceit lets the authors poke fun at crazy parts of the real world. ![]() And the TV show they're living isn't even well written. But the story is meta: the characters in the book eventually figure out that their lives are sometimes taken over by what they call "the Narrative" and the laws of physics stop working, they take actions that they would not normally take, and people die. It starts as a spin-off of Star Trek, and there are fun easter eggs that reference elements of that show. ![]()

![]() ![]() What never falters, though, is Risso's artwork. ![]() By midway, Azzarello's tone has gone fully manic, as his characters brutally destroy themselves in the hope of bringing some pain to their enemies. Some crucial plot points breeze by with only a baffling allusion, while others get driven home with a jackhammer. ![]() Stumbles, oddly, is its often scattered and distracted plotting, which blunts its impact. Azzarello's writing serves his thematic purposes (the endless reverberations of violence in American culture), and his punchy, vernacular dialogue glistens with vulgar brio. The final collection of Azzarello and Risso's 100-issue crime comic book crushes its grand construction into Grand Guignol as the series concludes in an inevitable bloodbath, with its high society cabals, sleeper assassins and no-one-is-innocent bystanders blowing each other to smithereens in the name of hollow revenge. ![]()

A Simple Christmas by Mike Huckabee6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Eventually we earned enough to buy the 45 rpm record of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," with "I Saw Her Standing There" on the B side of the record. The kids in my neighborhood were just as stricken as I was, and we started gathering Coke bottles that we found discarded on the side of the road and turning them in for their two-cent deposit value. So what if I was only eight years old at the time and had never played a guitar in my life? I wasn't concerned with minor details like that, and playing a guitar real loud and having girls scream for me seemed like a great goal in life. Like many kids who saw this quartet of long-haired Brits with electric guitars and drums, I realized their music was something very different, and I immediately knew that I wanted a guitar so I could become one of the Beatles. My family usually watched Ed Sullivan anyway, but that night was something special. On February 9, 1964, I was one of seventy-three million Americans watching The Ed Sullivan Show when the Beatles made their first appearance in the United States. ![]() |
