Several months later, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist. The Story of My Experiments with Truth is an autobiography by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, published in 1993. In 1947, India gained its independence, to a considerable extent thanks to Gandhi's continuous struggle. At the end of World War I, he returned to India, became a member of parliament and dedicated himself to India's struggle for independence from British rule by non-violent civil resistance (Satyagraha) – protests, hunger strikes and other actions, some of which landed him several times in prison. He studied law in England and worked in South-Africa, where he encountered severe manifestations of racism, and started developing his anti-colonial views. Gandhi was born to a Hindu family of a high caste in coastal Gujarat, western India, during the British rule. Pete Seeger and Judy Collins, superstars at the time, wrote songs inspired by the record. To everyone’s surprise – Payne was a bioacoustics expert, not a musician – it became a hit: it sold more than 125,000 copies, making it the most popular nature recording of all time. In 1970, Payne led a team that released a five-track, 34-minute album called Songs of the Humpback Whale. That was the clue that, ‘This is changing the lives of these people.’ And that’s how I think we’ve got it to really make a difference.” You would hear people basically coming out of a kind of trance. “You were unaware there was anybody in the room and then, when I killed it, there would be this… inhalation. “In that time, the audience would go totally silent,” says the 85-year-old, on a video call from rural Vermont. For the first 30 seconds, there is mumbling, sometimes awkward giggling as the audience gets used to the deep, rumbling groans and high-pitched squeaks (this is when the TV shows usually cut it off).īut leave it longer – at least five minutes, ideally half an hour – and Payne finds a strange thing happens. He has played sections in schools, in churches, on TV talk shows, at the UN he’s played them to singers, musicians, politicians and other scientists. R oger Payne has played the sounds made by humpback whales to thousands of people – “more than thousands,” he corrects himself – in the past 50 years.

The Vanishing Sky by L. Annette Binder6/12/2023 Etta doesn’t ask herself why, if the army is ready to conscript fifteen-year-old Georg, Max would be discharged. But at least her elder son, Max, is coming home to stay, after serving on the Eastern Front. Chitty chitty bang bang written by6/11/2023 The Pott Family find themselves out exploring the rural English countryside one day when things take a slight detour and Chitty begins showing off her wonderful capabilities (as many will know, cars prefer to be 'she' and Fleming discusses this). This vehicle appears somewhat standard in appearance but seems to have a personality all its own, down to its name, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. One that has been left to the side catches their attention and soon the Potts have a vehicle of their own. Commander Pott brings his wife (Mimsie) and twins (Jeremy and Jemima) along to find a vehicle that might suit them. After selling one of his ideas to a local confectionary, the Potts head out to purchase their first family car. Commander Caractacus Pott has a long history of inventing things, which provides limited success and forces the family to gather round in times of financial strain. While most famous for his work on creating Agent 007, Ian Fleming wrote this classic children's story many years ago, which entertains as much as it captures the interest of many young readers.
